Why it happens (the 30-second version)

When the pick-up roller goes hard and smooth it slips against the top sheet instead of pulling it, and the clutch cycles — that’s the grinding you hear. If the feeder cam lever has also let go, nothing is picked up at all and you get “No Paper”. The repair kit replaces the roller, feed roller, separation pad and cam lever together, so the grinding and the misfeeds go at once.

Why is my HL-2270DW grinding but not feeding?

The pick-up roller is slipping rather than gripping, so the clutch keeps cycling — that’s the noise. A fresh roller grips again; if the cam lever has gone too, the kit replaces that as well.

Is it worth fixing or should I replace the printer?

It’s a few pounds of wear parts against a new machine — almost always worth fixing. The kit and a screwdriver sort it in about 20 minutes.

Could it be the paper?

Cheap or damp paper can cause misfeeds on good rollers, so try a fresh ream first. If the grinding continues, it’s the feed parts.
