The feed faults worth knowing
“No Paper” with a full tray. The cam lever or the pick-up roller, almost every time. If the roller feels smooth and hard it has lost grip; if it whirrs but nothing moves, the cam has usually let go.
A grinding noise as it feeds. The roller is slipping instead of pulling, and the clutch is cycling — same cause, a little further along.
Pulls two sheets, or skews. The separation pad has hardened and lets extra sheets through, or a worn roller drags one edge. The repair kit’s pad and rollers fix both.
Works from the manual feed but not the tray. That confirms it’s the tray pick-up assembly, not the paper path or fuser.
A note on paper
Brother feed mechanisms are less forgiving than most. Cheap paper with a rough-cut edge, or a ream that’s sat in a damp office, will misfeed even on good rollers. If it started the week you switched paper, try the old brand before buying parts.
