Brother Printer Repair Guides – Feed & “No Paper” Faults

Brother printers have one signature fault, and it fools almost everybody. The machine reports “No Paper” with a tray that is visibly full. Nothing is broken, nothing is jammed — the pick-up roller has simply gone hard and stopped gripping, so the printer never sees a sheet arrive and reports the only thing it knows.

The three Brother faults worth knowing

“No Paper” with a full tray. Pick-up roller, every time. Run a fingertip across it — if it feels smooth and hard rather than slightly tacky, it has lost its grip. Cleaning it with isopropyl alcohol buys you a few weeks; replacing it fixes it.

A grinding or clacking noise as it tries to feed. The roller is slipping against the sheet instead of pulling it, and the clutch is cycling. Same cause, further along.

It works from the manual feed but not the tray. Confirms the fault is the tray pick-up assembly, not the paper path or the fuser. Useful test before you order anything.

A note on paper

Brother feed mechanisms are less forgiving than most. Cheap copier paper with a rough edge cut, or a ream that has sat in a damp office, will cause misfeeds on a machine with perfectly good rollers. If your printer started misbehaving the week you switched paper, try the old brand before you buy parts.
