HP Colour LaserJet fuser guide
Toner smudging or rubbing off, a faint repeated image, marks or bands repeating down every page, or a fuser error on your HP Colour LaserJet M452, M477, M454 or M479? That is almost always the fuser — and it is a replaceable part. The one thing to get right: these machines use a different fuser for duplex (two-sided) models than for simplex ones.

Repeating marks and smearing are the classic sign of a worn fuser film or a damaged pressure roller; a “Replace Fuser” message means the fuser has reached the end of its rated life. A fresh fuser clears all of these.
Why it happens — and the fix
The fuser is the heated unit at the back of the printer that bonds toner to the paper with heat and pressure. As its film sleeve, heat roller or pressure roller wear out, the toner stops bonding properly — so it smudges or rubs off, leaves a faint repeated (ghost) image, drops the same mark or band at a set interval down every page, or crinkles the paper. Past a set page count the printer also trips a 50.x fuser error or a “Replace Fuser” message. Fitting a fresh fuser clears all of it. On this family that means one of two units — the RM2-6436 simplex fuser or the RM2-6461 / RM2-6435 duplex fuser — and the next step shows which one your model takes.
Which fuser does your model need — duplex or simplex?
This is the only thing you have to get right. The duplex (automatic two-sided) models and the simplex (single-sided) models in this range take different fuser units — they are not interchangeable. Here is how to tell in two seconds:

Being straight with you: smudging, ghosting and marks repeating down the page are usually the fuser on these models, and the guide above gets most people to the right part first time. But a single faint or streaky colour, or banding across colour areas, can be a toner cartridge or the transfer belt instead. Common questions
How do I know it is the fuser and not the toner or something else?
The giveaway signs of a fuser fault are toner that smudges or rubs off the page, print that never properly fuses, a faint repeated (ghost) image, marks or bands repeating at a regular interval down every page, curled or creased paper, or a 50.x fuser error or “Replace Fuser” message. If instead only one colour is faint or streaky, that usually points to a toner cartridge, and banding across colour areas can be the transfer belt. Not sure? Duplex or simplex — which fuser does my M477 or M479 take?
If your printer prints on both sides of the paper automatically, it is a duplex model and takes the duplex fuser — these are the models ending in dn, dw, fdn or fdw (for example M477fdw, M479fdw, M452dn). If it only prints one side and you turn the paper over yourself, it is a simplex model and takes the simplex fuser — the models ending in n, nw or fnw (for example M452nw, M477fnw). The two fusers are not interchangeable, so this is the one thing to confirm before ordering. If you are unsure, email us your exact model number and we will confirm it.
Do I need to reset the fuser counter after fitting it?
Some models ask you to reset the fuser or maintenance counter through the service menu after a new fuser is fitted. If yours does, our GenieCare™ team will send you written, step-by-step instructions by email — included free for 30 days from purchase, and continuing whenever you order your toner from us.
Can you fit it for me instead?
