HP Printer Repair Guides – LaserJet Jams & Print Quality
HP LaserJets are built to be repaired. The parts that fail are designed to be replaced, and on most models the job takes a screwdriver and about fifteen minutes. The trick is knowing which of the three usual suspects has actually gone.
Find your model below, or use the symptom guide underneath if you are not sure where to start.

- HP LaserJet Pro M402dn — paper jam repair, toner, fuser & service options
Diagnose it by symptom
“Paper jam” but there is no paper stuck. The sensor flag is catching, or the pick-up roller has failed and the printer has timed out waiting for a sheet to arrive. Check the roller first — if the rubber looks shiny rather than matt, it has glazed and lost grip.
It grabs several sheets at once. The separation pad in the tray has worn smooth. On most LaserJets this is a two-pound part held in by one screw.
Print smudges when you rub it. The fuser is not reaching temperature or the film sleeve has split. Output that looks fine but wipes off is a fuser fault every time, not a toner fault.
Colour is off, or you get repeating bands. On the M552, M553, M554, M555, M577 and M578 this is usually the transfer belt rather than a cartridge — worth checking before you replace four toners.
It only jams from tray 2, never the manual feed. Tray 2 pick-up and feed rollers wear first because they do the most work. The manual feed roller is usually still fine, which is a useful confirmation.
